Thorisos Dam stands at the natural northern outlet of Lake Thorisvatn. It was constructed as part of the Thorisvatn regulation scheme in 1970–1972 and plays an important role in controlling water within the upper Thjorsa and Tungnaa hydropower system.
The dam closes the lake's former natural outlet. At the same time, the Kaldakvisl river was diverted into Thorisvatn and a new controlled outlet was constructed at the southern end through the Vatnsfell diversion.
