Sultartangi Dam

Sultartangi Dam forms the Sultartangi reservoir within the Thjorsa and Tungnaa hydropower system in Iceland's southern highlands.

At approximately 6.1 kilometres, it is the longest dam in Iceland. Water from the Tungnaa and Thjorsa river systems meets in Sultartangi Reservoir before being used by Sultartangi Power Station. More than three kilometres of headrace tunnels carry water from the reservoir through Sandafell towards the station.

Sultartangi Power Station entered service in 1999, and the area provides a good example of the interconnected reservoirs, dams and power stations of Iceland's highland hydropower system.
