Múlagljúfur

Múlagljúfur is one of Iceland’s most beautiful and diverse canyons, located south of Vatnajökull, just west of Fjallsárlón. The canyon is framed by high cliffs, lush slopes and dramatic terrain that stands in striking contrast to the surrounding outwash plains of Southeast Iceland.

Streams and small rivers flow through the canyon, creating numerous waterfalls, green moss-covered walls and tranquil pools — a rare sight in this otherwise rugged landscape. The contrast between dark volcanic rock, clear glacial water and vibrant vegetation makes Múlagljúfur a true natural gem.

For many years the canyon remained relatively unknown, visited mainly by locals. In recent years it has become increasingly popular among hikers seeking peaceful surroundings and impressive scenery away from Iceland’s busiest trails.

The hiking route into Múlagljúfur crosses open terrain and follows waterways that have carved deep channels into the volcanic bedrock. As the trail continues inward, views open toward cascading waterfalls, green ravines and towering canyon walls.

At the upper reaches of the canyon, panoramic views unfold across Skeiðarársandur, the glacier tongues of Vatnajökull and the surrounding mountains of Southeast Iceland. On clear days, this viewpoint is considered among the finest in the region.

Múlagljúfur is a place where nature feels untouched. Here, water, rock, vegetation and ice exist in rare balance, creating a powerful and memorable experience for those who venture into the canyon.
