The Hvalfjörður Whaling Station operated from 1948 to 1986 and was once among the largest whaling stations in the world. Located at the inner part of Hvalfjörður fjord, it played an important role in Iceland’s industrial history.
Large whales — mainly fin whales and sei whales — were processed here. During peak seasons, hundreds of workers were employed.
Today, the abandoned buildings, machinery, and concrete ruins remain as powerful reminders of Iceland’s whaling era. The site has become a popular destination for visitors interested in history, photography, and industrial heritage.
