Discover Iceland
Laugarárgil is a canyon in South Iceland where water erosion and long-term weathering have cut deeply into the surrounding landscape. Steep slopes, exposed rock and a narrow channel give the gorge a rugged appearance.
The canyon demonstrates how water, frost and other natural forces gradually shape Icelandic bedrock. Laugarárgil is less widely known than many of South Iceland's larger canyons, making it an interesting stop for travellers looking for quieter natural sites away from the busiest routes.
A visit can be combined with Hvolsvöllur, Seljavellir and other destinations beneath the Eyjafjöll mountains. Extra care is required near canyon edges, loose rock and during wet or windy conditions.
Canyon shaped by water erosion
Laugarárgil was formed as flowing water cut into bedrock and unconsolidated material. Prolonged erosion created the steep slopes and defined channel of the canyon.
Summer and autumn
Take care near edges, loose rock and in wet or windy conditions.
