Discover Iceland
Stuðlagil is one of Iceland's most remarkable basalt-column canyons, located in the upper Jökuldalur valley in East Iceland. Tall, regular basalt formations rise on both sides of the Jökla river, creating one of the region's most distinctive geological landscapes.
Columnar basalt forms when basaltic lava cools and contracts, producing regular fractures that develop into tall polygonal columns. At Stuðlagil, these formations are especially impressive along the walls of the canyon.
The canyon became much more visible after the flow of Jökla changed following hydropower development in the Highlands. Today, visitors can view the gorge from an observation area on one side of the river or hike toward the canyon from the eastern side.
Walking distances vary depending on the chosen starting point. Rocks around the canyon can be wet and slippery, and Jökla is a powerful river, so visitors should stay on established routes and take particular care near the water.
Basalt columns
Stuðlagil is known for its prominent basalt columns. The columns formed as lava cooled and contracted, while the Jökla river later cut down through the rock and exposed the columnar basalt along the canyon walls.
