Skógárgil is a deep, green canyon carved by the Skógá river above Skógafoss. One of its most distinctive features is the remarkable number of waterfalls that appear one after another as the trail climbs alongside the river.

The route beside Skógá forms part of the famous Fimmvörðuháls hiking trail. From Skógafoss, hikers climb beside the waterfall and continue upstream, passing numerous smaller waterfalls, ravines and river channels.

Visitors do not need to complete the entire Fimmvörðuháls hike to experience Skógárgil. It is easy to walk only part of the route before returning to Skógafoss.

Anyone continuing higher should remember that weather conditions can change rapidly with elevation and may become demanding even during summer.

Geology

Skógárgil was carved by the Skógá river through volcanic formations containing layers of hyaloclastite and lava. The river and its waterfalls have shaped the canyon and numerous rock ledges.
