About Ljosartungur Geothermal Area
Ljosartungur is a defined geothermal area west of Torfajokull and part of the vast Torfajokull high-temperature geothermal system. The landscape is characterised by pale rhyolite, gullies and geothermal alteration, with little visitor infrastructure. Geothermal activity across Torfajokull is highly varied, including fumaroles, mud pots and hot-water springs depending on local conditions. Travel through Ljosartungur requires highland experience and careful preparation.
