Troll Gorge

Tröllagil is a deep gorge in the mountain landscape above Seljalandsfoss, where the Seljalandsá river descends from the Highlands. Steep slopes, rock formations and a narrow channel give the gorge a rugged character.

The name of the gorge is connected with local folklore and traditional stories of a troll woman said to have lived in the area. Such stories are common in Icelandic place names, where unusual cliffs and rock formations were often associated with trolls and other legendary beings.

Tröllagil receives far fewer visitors than Seljalandsfoss and the better-known attractions beneath Eyjafjöll. Access and ground conditions may vary, and care is required on steep, wet or loose terrain.
