Gljúfrabúi, also known as Gljúfurárfoss, is a hidden
and enchanting waterfall located just east of
Seljalandsfoss in South Iceland. The waterfall is
situated near the farm Hamragarðar, where a popular
camping area can also be found.
Gljúfrabúi is approximately 40 meters high and plunges into a narrow and deep
canyon that almost completely conceals it from view. Only a small opening in the
cliff hints at the waterfall hidden within, creating a mysterious and dramatic
atmosphere.
To experience the waterfall up close, visitors must wade into the gorge, often
crossing shallow but rocky water. Inside the canyon, the view opens to an
impressive natural chamber where the waterfall crashes down between moss-covered
rock walls.
An alternative viewpoint can be reached from the cliff edge above the gorge,
offering a dramatic perspective looking down into the chasm. This route is not
recommended for those uncomfortable with heights, and surfaces may be slippery,
especially after rain or snowmelt.
Thanks to its close proximity to
Seljalandsá and Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi is a
popular stop along Iceland’s South Coast, yet it remains one of the area’s most
magical and atmospheric waterfalls.
