Eldfell is the volcanic cone that formed during the 1973 eruption on Heimaey in the Westman Islands. The eruption began on 23 January 1973 and dramatically reshaped the eastern side of the island, forcing a rapid evacuation of most residents.
The eruption lasted until July 1973, and the new lava field enlarged Heimaey while threatening both homes and the harbour. Today Eldfell is one of Iceland's clearest places to see how a modern volcanic eruption can transform a settled landscape.
