The avalanche protection dams above Neskaupstaður are among the largest safety structures of their kind in Iceland and play a vital role in protecting the town.
Built high above the residential area, the dams form a powerful defense against avalanches that once posed a serious threat to the community. Well-marked walking paths have been created around the area, making it accessible for visitors.
Visitors can walk along and on top of the structures, where panoramic views open across Norðfjörður, the town below and the surrounding mountains.
Today, the avalanche barriers are not only an essential safety measure but also a popular destination for hiking, sightseeing and photography.
