About Heimaey
Heimaey is the largest and only permanently inhabited island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago. It is a volcanic island shaped by repeated eruptions, most recently the 1973 eruption when Eldfell formed and lava flowed towards the town and harbour. Heimaey combines remarkable geology, high sea cliffs, abundant birdlife, a thriving settlement and a strong maritime history.
