Eldfell Lava Field, also known as New Lava, was formed during the 1973 volcanic eruption on Heimaey in the Westman Islands. The eruption began on January 23, when a volcanic fissure opened near the eastern edge of the town, eventually forming the volcano Eldfell.
Lava destroyed numerous buildings and permanently transformed the island. As the advancing lava threatened the harbour entrance, seawater was pumped onto the lava to slow its advance and help protect the harbour.
Today, Eldfell Lava Field offers visitors a remarkable opportunity to explore young volcanic terrain and discover how the 1973 eruption reshaped Heimaey and affected its community.
