Systrafoss is a picturesque waterfall located just above the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur in South Iceland. The waterfall flows in two distinct tiers down the hillside from Systravatn (literally “Sisters’ Lake”), making it a striking feature of the local landscape.

The name of the waterfall is closely connected to the history of the convent that once stood in Kirkjubæjarklaustur during the Middle Ages. According to local history and folklore, nuns (the “sisters”) lived in the area, and the waterfall is named in their honor.

A hiking trail leads from the village up to the waterfall and continues to Systravatn. The walk offers beautiful views over Kirkjubæjarklaustur, the surrounding plains, and nearby mountains. The trail is relatively short and suitable for most visitors.

Systrafoss is a popular stop for travelers exploring South Iceland and is especially impressive in spring and early summer when water levels are high and the surrounding nature is at its greenest.
