Waterfalls of Iceland
Ófærufoss is a waterfall in the Eldgjá area of the Icelandic Highlands, roughly north of Mýrdalsjökull. The waterfall is formed by the river Norðari-Ófæra and drops through the dark volcanic landscape of the fissure system.
The surrounding highland terrain is remote and conditions can change quickly, so access, road conditions and weather should always be checked before travelling to the area.
Ófærufoss lies in the Nyrðri-Ófæra river and descends in two cascades into Eldgjá. Eldgjá is a major volcanic fissure associated with the Katla volcanic system. A natural stone arch once crossed the lower waterfall until it collapsed during the spring thaw in 1993.
