Kollafjörður is a small and scenic fjord in
West Iceland, located south of
Hvalfjörður and close to the
Capital Region.
The fjord lies between the
Kjalarnes peninsula and
Mosfellsbær, forming a natural transition between
urban areas and open countryside.
Kollafjörður is characterised by its calm atmosphere, low-lying coastline,
and wide tidal flats. The surrounding landscape offers beautiful views toward
nearby mountains such as
Mount Esja,
Úlfarsfell,
and
Hafrafell.
The shoreline is varied, featuring rocky beaches, shallow waters, and rich birdlife.
At low tide, extensive mudflats are revealed, making the area popular for nature walks,
birdwatching, and photography — especially during calm evenings and sunset.
Kollafjörður also holds a place in Icelandic history and folklore. In the medieval
Kjalnesinga Saga, the fjord is mentioned in connection with the arrival of an
Irish woman named Esja, a story that has become part of the region’s cultural heritage.
Several notable attractions lie close to the fjord, including
Esjuberg,
Meðalfellsvatn,
Mosfellsbær,
Úlfarsfell,
and the hiking areas of
Kjalarnes.
With its peaceful surroundings, scenic views, and close proximity to Reykjavík,
Kollafjörður offers a quiet natural escape where visitors can experience Iceland’s
coastal landscape only minutes from the capital.
