Discover Iceland
Akranesviti is one of the best-known landmarks on the Akranes coastline in West Iceland. Two lighthouses stand at the outer edge of the peninsula: an older concrete tower from 1918 and the taller lighthouse that entered service in 1947.
The newer lighthouse was built in the 1940s and stands about 22.7 metres high. The site offers a strong connection with the maritime history of Akranes and wide coastal views over Faxaflói.
The current Akranes lighthouse was built in 1943–1944 to a design by engineer Axel Sveinsson. The tower is 19.2 metres high and is open to visitors.
