Víknaslóðir
Víknaslóðir is one of the best-known hiking areas in East Iceland,
located in the remote highlands north of
Borgarfjörður Eystri.
The region is known for its varied landscape, where deep fjords, sheltered coves,
and rhyolite mountains form a distinctive natural setting.
The hiking route usually begins in Borgarfjörður Eystri and follows old travel paths
that once connected small coastal settlements. Much of the area remains largely
untouched, and along the way visitors can see traces of former farms that were
abandoned during the 20th century.
Víknaslóðir connects several remote coves and valleys, including
Brúnavík,
Breiðuvík and
Húsavík,
where wide views, birdlife and a strong sense of isolation characterize the surroundings.
Mountain huts operated by the East Iceland Touring Association are located at
Beiðuvík and
Húsavík,
and accommodation has at times also been available in
Loðmundarfjörður.
The route is most commonly completed in three days, though many hikers choose to
extend the journey and continue across the mountains toward
Seyðisfjörður.
The trail is marked and generally easy to follow, but proper hiking experience
and awareness of weather conditions are essential.
Víknaslóðir is well suited for those seeking solitude, unspoiled nature, and a deeper
connection to the landscape and settlement history of the Eastfjords.
