Þakgil is a beautiful sheltered valley and canyon landscape located between Mýrdalsjökull and Mýrdalssandur in South Iceland, approximately 14 kilometres from the Ring Road. Surrounded by steep green mountains and dramatic volcanic scenery, the valley feels surprisingly secluded despite being relatively close to Vík.
The road to Þakgil branches away from the Ring Road near Höfðabrekka, around 5 kilometres east of Vík. Part of the route follows the former Ring Road, which served as Iceland's main road until 1955, before continuing into the highland landscape towards Þakgil.
One of the defining features of Þakgil is its sheltered location. The surrounding mountains provide protection from the weather and create a green oasis among the darker volcanic landscapes between Mýrdalsjökull and Mýrdalssandur.
The area offers several hiking routes of varying difficulty, making Þakgil a good base for exploring the surrounding mountains, canyons and viewpoints. The landscape combines steep ridges, green valleys and impressive views towards the glacial terrain around Mýrdalsjökull.
A campsite is located in Þakgil with toilets and shower facilities. One of its most unusual features is a natural cave that has been turned into a dining and gathering area, complete with tables, benches, a fireplace and a grill.
Þakgil is an excellent choice for travellers looking for hiking, dramatic scenery and a quieter nature experience close to Vík. The combination of sheltered surroundings, unusual geology and access to several walking routes makes it one of the more distinctive outdoor destinations in South Iceland.
