Skeiðarárjökull is a major outlet glacier flowing south from Vatnajökull towards Skeiðarársandur. The glacier and the glacial rivers draining from it have shaped one of Iceland's largest outwash plains. Skeiðarárjökull is also closely associated with major glacial outburst floods, when meltwater has escaped from beneath the ice and surged across Skeiðarársandur.
