Svínafellsjökull is an outlet glacier descending from Öræfajökull on the southern edge of Vatnajökull. Steep ice formations, crevasses and dark ash layers give the glacier a dramatic appearance and make the area a striking place to observe glacial landscapes from a safe distance.

The glacier lies within the same wider natural region as Skaftafell Nature Reserve and Öræfajökull. Glaciers are constantly changing and can be dangerous beyond marked routes, so do not enter the ice without appropriate expertise and equipment.
