Discover Iceland
Öræfajökull is a glacier-covered volcano in Southeast Iceland and forms the southern part of Vatnajökull. Several outlet glaciers descend from the ice-covered mountain, and Hvannadalshnúkur, Iceland's highest summit, rises on the rim of the caldera.
Öræfajökull is also an active central volcano and has erupted twice in historical times, in 1362 and 1727. The combination of volcano, glacier and surrounding outlet glaciers makes it one of Iceland's most imposing mountain landscapes.
High-level travel on Öræfajökull is demanding glacier mountaineering requiring proper experience, equipment and suitable conditions.
