Sauðanes Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse located at Siglufjörður on the northern coast of the Tröllaskagi peninsula. Situated west of the fjord’s entrance, the lighthouse has played a vital role in guiding ships safely into Siglufjörður for nearly a century.

The lighthouse complex was built in 1933–1934 and originally consisted of both a light tower and a fog signal station. The light tower is approximately four meters high and constructed from reinforced concrete with a copper roof. It was originally equipped with a 125° dioptric lens and gas-powered lighting, before being electrified in 1961.

Gas lighting remained as a backup system until 1995, when emergency bulbs connected to battery power were installed. The fog signal station was an essential navigational aid during periods of heavy fog and darkness, emitting distinct sound signals several times per minute until it was decommissioned in 1992.

The two structures stand in separate towers: the lower tower near the shoreline housed the fog signal, while the higher tower contains the lighthouse itself. Nearby buildings include a keeper’s house, engine room, and fuel storage, forming a complete and well-preserved lighthouse station.

Below the lighthouse on the shoreline stands a mechanical winch with gallows and boom, once used to haul supplies ashore. This equipment has a unique history, having originally been installed by British forces in Aðalvík on the Hornstrandir peninsula during World War II before later being relocated to Sauðanes.

In 1966, full-time lighthouse keeper service was discontinued, and permanent residence at the site came to an end. Despite this, Sauðanes Lighthouse remains an important cultural and historical monument reflecting Iceland’s maritime heritage.

Several notable attractions are located nearby, including Siglufjörður, Siglufjörður Church, the local swimming pool, Siglufjörður Campsite, The Herring Era Museum, Siglunes, Héðinsfjörður, and Héðinsfjarðarvatn.

With its dramatic coastal setting, rich maritime history, and sweeping views of the North Atlantic Ocean, Sauðanes Lighthouse is a memorable destination for travelers exploring the northern reaches of Iceland.
