About Hafragil Gorge
Hafragil is a deep and rugged side gorge extending west from Jökulsárgljúfur just north of Hafragilsfoss. This part of the canyon system is among its deepest and most dramatic, with canyon walls exceeding one hundred metres in places. Volcanic activity, catastrophic glacial floods and prolonged erosion have shaped the landscape, exposing volcanic structures and lava layers.

Geology
Hafragil connects with Jökulsárgljúfur in an area where intense erosion and glacial floods have cut deeply into volcanic formations. Lava layers and volcanic structures are exposed in the canyon walls.
Visit tips
The area is best viewed from marked trails and viewpoints. Canyon edges are extremely steep, and descending into the Hafragil lowlands should only be attempted on appropriate routes.
