Gjastykki is a dramatic fissure zone north of Krafla and part of the active volcanic and rift system of Northeast Iceland. The landscape is characterised by open fissures, faults, lava and clear evidence of crustal movement. The area is associated with the Krafla volcanic system and is important for understanding rifting and volcanism in Iceland. Gjastykki has far less visitor infrastructure than the better-known attractions around Lake Myvatn, so trips require preparation and care around fragile geothermal and fissured terrain.
