Gjallandi is a waterfall in the Skjálfandafljót river and is the uppermost waterfall in the river’s waterfall system. The falls are set in a vast and rugged landscape where the volume of the river and the surrounding terrain create a striking natural scene.

Gjallandi is the uppermost waterfall in the Skjálfandafljót river. The river originates in the Vatnajökull area, including glacial rivers from Vonarskarð and beneath Bárðarbunga. Skjálfandafljót is a clear-water river with a glacial component, so the colour of the water can vary. A natural stone arch once existed at Gjallandi, and the waterfall was therefore sometimes called Steinbogafoss.
