About Eldgjá
Eldgjá is a vast volcanic fissure in the Icelandic Highlands. It forms part of an extensive fissure system and has been shaped by major volcanic activity as well as erosion. Its walls are high in places and the surrounding landscape is rugged and dramatic. The Nyrðri-Ófæra river crosses the area and forms Ófærufoss, one of Eldgjá's best-known features. Eldgjá lies within Vatnajökull National Park and provides an exceptional view into Iceland's volcanic and tectonic landscape.

Visit tips
Access is via Highland roads and depends on conditions. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is required on many approaches and road conditions should be checked before travelling.
