Bláfjöll is a large protected recreation area in Southwest Iceland and one of the most important outdoor areas near the Capital Region. It was protected in 1973 and covers more than 90 km².
The landscape contains mountains, lava fields, craters and caves shaped by volcanic activity. The purpose of the protection is to preserve this distinctive environment while maintaining public access for recreation.
One notable protected feature within the wider Bláfjöll landscape is Eldborg in Bláfjöll, a protected volcanic crater of geological importance.
Off-road driving is prohibited. Visitors should use recognised routes, protect fragile geological formations and vegetation and be prepared for rapidly changing weather.
