Reykjanes Protected Recreation Area is one of the largest protected outdoor areas in Southwest Iceland. It was established in 1975 and covers more than 292 km².
The landscape contains young lava fields, volcanic mountains, geothermal areas and lakes. The purpose of the protection is to preserve this distinctive volcanic environment while maintaining a large area for public recreation.
The area includes numerous geological features and outdoor routes. Places listed on the site include Eldsmiðjan Cave and Skátalaug, along with many other attractions on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
Off-road driving is prohibited and visitors must respect closures caused by conservation needs, weather or volcanic hazards.
