Stapavík by Héraðsflói is a coastal or beach area in East Iceland, shaped by open shoreline, sea views and the surrounding landscape. Tides, light and weather can change the character of the coast significantly, making each visit look and feel different.

The visit can be combined with Borgarfjörður eystri and Héraðssandur. Around Icelandic coasts, always keep a safe distance from strong surf and pay close attention to local conditions.

Safety

Access is on foot from Unaós. The walk takes approximately one hour each way. Follow the marked route and take weather conditions into account.

Stapavík lies by Héraðsflói near the mouth of the Selfljót river. A marked trail follows the river from Unaós to the inlet. North of the river lies the extensive black-sand Héraðssandur beach. Stapavík served as an unloading port from 1930 to 1945 and historical remains can still be seen.
