Rjukandi Waterfall

Rjúkandi is an impressive waterfall in Jökuldalur in East Iceland and one of the most accessible major waterfalls in this part of the country. The waterfall is clearly visible from the Ring Road, approximately 50 km from Egilsstaðir when travelling towards Mývatn.

Rjúkandi descends the steep mountainside in two major drops with a total vertical fall of approximately 93 metres. The upper section drops around 33 metres, while the larger lower section falls approximately 60 metres.

The waterfall is formed by the stream Ysta-Rjúkandi. Three neighbouring streams in the area carry the Rjúkandi name: Ysta-Rjúkandi, Mið-Rjúkandi and Fremsta-Rjúkandi. Fremsta-Rjúkandi also forms waterfalls on the mountainside, but Ysta-Rjúkandi is by far the most prominent and is the waterfall generally known simply as Rjúkandi.

The name Rjúkandi suits the waterfall well, referring to the mist and spray created as the water plunges down the high cliffs. When the flow is strong, spray can rise around the waterfall and give it a smoky appearance.

Access to Rjúkandi is excellent. A parking area is located beside Route 1 and a short walking trail of approximately 300 metres leads towards the base of the waterfall. This makes Rjúkandi an easy stop when travelling between Egilsstaðir and Northeast Iceland.

The waterfall and surrounding slopes also provide attractive views across Jökuldalur. A visit can easily be combined with other attractions in the valley, including Stuðlagil canyon.

Although the walk is short, visitors should take care close to the waterfall and on steeper terrain, particularly in wet, snowy or icy conditions.
