Hverfjall, or Hverfell, is a large volcanic crater beside Mývatn.
Nearby attractions include Dimmuborgir, Skútustaðagígar and Mývatn Nature Baths.
The crater is one of the most prominent landmarks around Mývatn. Walking routes provide views over the lake, lava fields and surrounding volcanic landscapes, but visitors should stay on designated paths to reduce erosion of the loose volcanic material.
The purpose of protecting Hverfjall is to preserve its exceptionally regular tephra crater, its geological setting and surrounding landscape.
Hverfjall is a large and remarkably regular tephra crater near Lake Mývatn. It formed in an explosive eruption around 2,500 years ago and is among the largest craters of its type.
Hikers should use designated trails on the crater to reduce erosion and protect sensitive geological formations.
