Hvaleyrarlón and Hvaleyrarhöfði form a protected coastal recreation area by Hafnarfjörður. Mudflats, shoreline habitats and shallow water create an ecologically valuable environment. The area was protected in 2009 and covers approximately 0.4 km².
The reserve protects biologically rich mudflats and shores as well as an important stopover area for migratory birds. At low tide, exposed mudflats provide feeding habitat for many birds.
The area is close to Hafnarfjörður. Nearby places include Hvaleyri Golf Course and the recreation area around Víðistaðatún.
Motorised traffic is generally prohibited and visitors should avoid disturbing birds or sensitive coastal habitats.
The purpose of protection is to conserve rich tidal flats and shore habitats, an important stopover site for migratory birds and the recreational value of the area.
