Hella is a small town located in Rangárþing Ytra in southern Iceland. The settlement lies on the eastern bank of the Ytri-Rangá River, beside the bridge where the South Coast Road crosses the river.
Development of Hella began in the late 1920s when Þorsteinn Björnsson constructed a trading post near the bridge on land belonging to the farm Gaddstaðir. This marked the beginning of permanent settlement and the foundation of the town.
In the mid-20th century, the cooperative Kaupfélag Þór took over the business and expanded commercial and industrial activities. As a result, Hella developed into an important service center for the surrounding rural communities.
Today, Hella offers a wide range of services, including shops, accommodation, restaurants, healthcare facilities, and tourist information. The town continues to serve as a regional hub for southern Iceland.
Its location along one of the main transportation routes of the country makes Hella a convenient stop for travelers exploring the South Coast and nearby highland regions.
Hella er þéttbýlisstaður við Ytri-Rangá.
Þorpið er vinsæll viðkomustaður ferðamanna á Suðurlandi.
