Djúpavíkurfoss cascades down the steep mountainside directly above the tiny settlement of Djúpavík in the Strandir region of the Westfjords. The waterfall is one of the area's most distinctive landmarks and can be seen clearly from the settlement and the historic herring factory by Reykjarfjörður.
A hiking trail follows the waterfall up the mountainside and above the cliffs. From higher ground there are impressive views over Djúpavík, Reykjarfjörður and the surrounding mountains. The climb takes roughly 30–45 minutes, but the terrain can be steep and exposed near the waterfall, particularly in wet conditions.
Djúpavík has a remarkable industrial history. The enormous former herring factory at the foot of the mountain is a reminder of Iceland's herring boom, while Djúpavíkurfoss cascading down the cliffs immediately behind it creates one of the most distinctive landscapes in Strandir.
Djúpavíkurfoss and Djúpavík also appeared in the film Justice League. Scenes from Batman's search for Aquaman were filmed here, including shots from above the waterfall overlooking the settlement.
Djúpavík lies in a remote part of Strandir and is reached via road 643. Road and weather conditions can change considerably, particularly outside the summer season, so visitors should check current conditions before travelling.
