Breiðholt Church

Breiðholt Church is one of the key landmarks of the Breiðholt district and plays an important role in the life of the local congregation and the wider community. The church was consecrated in 1988 by Pétur Sigurgeirsson, then Bishop of Iceland, marking an important milestone in church life in the area.

The church building reflects modern church architecture, with an emphasis on simplicity, natural light, and a welcoming atmosphere. The interior is open and spacious, creating a calm and dignified setting for worship, musical performances, and other church-related activities.

The parish hall of Breiðholt Church was completed and taken into use in 1992. Its addition significantly strengthened the church’s role as a community center, providing facilities for a wide range of activities including children’s programs, youth work, educational events, meetings, and social gatherings for people of all ages.

Since its founding, Breiðholt Church has served as a focal point of community life in the neighborhood. The church places strong emphasis on being open and accessible to everyone, offering spiritual support in times of joy and sorrow and providing a place of peace and reflection amid everyday life.

The church also plays an important cultural role, hosting concerts, community events, and gatherings that attract visitors from across the city. In this way, Breiðholt Church combines its religious mission with social and cultural responsibility in a vibrant and meaningful manner.

The place can form part of a wider journey through Southwest Iceland, making it easy to combine the visit with other destinations in the region.
