Breiðdalsvík

Breiðdalsvík is a small and welcoming village in the Eastfjords of Iceland. It lies by the bay of the same name, between Kambanes and Streitishvarf, where mountains meet the open sea and create a peaceful coastal landscape.

The population of Breiðdalsvík has changed over time. During the late 20th century more than 200 people lived in the village, while today the community is smaller in size but known for its close-knit character and strong connection to nature and the ocean.

Fishing has long been the main livelihood of the village, but services for nearby rural areas and tourism have become increasingly important. For travellers exploring the Eastfjords, Breiðdalsvík offers a quiet stopover with scenic coastal views and a relaxed atmosphere.

History of settlement

Permanent settlement in Breiðdalsvík began in the late 19th century. In 1889 the Gránufélag trading company built a warehouse at the site, marking the beginning of year-round habitation.

In 1896, the Brynes trading company from Seyðisfjörður constructed a commercial building on Selnes. Although the original structure was destroyed by fire around 1900, a new building was soon erected and still stands today as the oldest house in the village.

From its earliest days, Breiðdalsvík served as a natural harbour and an important centre for fishing and trade for the surrounding district.

Nature and surroundings

The natural environment around Breiðdalsvík is diverse and accessible. The village features a swimming pool and outdoor recreation areas, while camping facilities and a disc golf course attract visitors during the summer months.

Nearby natural attractions include the waterfall Beljandi, which cascades into a narrow gorge, as well as historic churches such as Heydalakirkja and Búðakirkja, both reflecting the region’s long cultural and religious history.

Within a short driving distance are the villages of Fáskrúðsfjörður and Stöðvarfjörður, each offering its own character, heritage and services, closely connected to the maritime history of the Eastfjords.

Breiðdalsvík is a calm and inviting destination where history, daily life and nature blend together. It is well suited for travellers seeking the slower rhythm of the Eastfjords, dramatic landscapes and an authentic Icelandic village atmosphere.
