Ástjörn Nature Reserve is a small but important protected wetland in Hafnarfjörður. The pond and surrounding area were protected in 1978 and cover approximately 0.29 km². The main purpose of the reserve is to protect wetland habitats and birdlife.

Ástjörn is a good example of valuable nature within an urban area. The pond and surrounding vegetation provide habitat for a range of birds, and access is restricted in parts of the reserve from May 1 to July 15 during the breeding season.

A visit can easily be combined with other places in Hafnarfjörður, including Hamarinn Natural Monument and Víðistaðatún.

Visitors should respect seasonal restrictions, keep their distance from birds and avoid disturbing wetlands or vegetation.
