Völvuskógur Forest near Skógar
Völvuskógur is a woodland of approximately ten hectares near Skógar in South Iceland. The forest has an important history connected with forestry, land restoration and the work of students at Skógar School.
Forest history
Planting began in spring 1950 under the initiative of teacher Jón Jósep Jóhannesson. One of the main objectives was to reduce soil erosion and provide shelter in an area previously exposed to strong winds.
Students and teachers participated in planting and experimenting with different tree species. Their efforts gradually transformed the landscape into a sheltered woodland.
Trees and vegetation
The forest contains Sitka spruce, poplar and several species of larch. Some trees have reached heights of around twenty metres. Older and less common species reflect the experimental history of forestry in the area.
Walking trails
Walking routes include Þrasastígur and Vargaslóð. Visitors can explore bridges, interpretive signs, labelled trees and resting areas. Some routes involve steep climbs, while others are suitable for gentler woodland walks.
