Eyjólfsstaðaskógur Forest
Eyjólfsstaðaskógur is an extensive woodland in the Vellir area of East Iceland. Covering approximately 172 hectares, the forest reaches elevations of around 250 metres above sea level.
Forestry history
The East Iceland Forestry Association purchased the forest in 1944. Originally dominated by native birch, the woodland was later expanded through conifer planting. The first conifers were planted in 1949, with major planting efforts taking place between 1957 and 1974.
Spruce trees have grown particularly well here, creating a varied woodland landscape alongside the native birch.
Walking and facilities
The forest is an inviting place for walking, relaxation and outdoor recreation. Visitors can explore woodland paths and enjoy clearings equipped with benches and picnic tables.
The forest also contains Blöndalsbúð, a building associated with the East Iceland Forestry Association.
