Víðgelmir Cave
Víðgelmir is one of Iceland's largest and best-known lava caves, located in the Hallmundarhraun lava field in West Iceland. The cave is approximately 1.6 kilometres long and contains large chambers, colourful lava formations and seasonal ice formations.
The cave has been protected since 1993. Access is by guided tour, and walkways and lighting have been installed to make a substantial part of the cave easier to explore.
Archaeological remains have also been discovered inside Víðgelmir, adding historical significance to its remarkable geology.
