Svuntufoss is a small and little-known waterfall at the head of Patreksfjörður in the southern Westfjords. Although located only a short distance from Route 62, the waterfall lies away from the main tourist attractions and is easily missed by travellers passing through the area.
The waterfall flows through a rocky channel before dropping into a pool surrounded by steep rock walls. The layered geology and rugged landscape at the head of Patreksfjörður give the site a distinctly Westfjords character.
Svuntufoss is reached from Route 62. When travelling towards Patreksfjörður, a small gravel road turns off approximately five minutes after passing the Kleifakarl monument on Kleifaheiði. The gravel road is short but can be in poor condition, so it should be driven slowly and carefully.
There are no designated parking spaces, toilets or other visitor facilities at the waterfall. Visitors should therefore park responsibly, avoid blocking access and leave the area as they found it.
Although Svuntufoss may appear relatively modest from a distance, the local tourism authority specifically warns that the water is more powerful than it may seem. Visitors should take particular care around the waterfall, pool and wet rocks.
Svuntufoss makes an interesting short stop for travellers exploring the southern Westfjords, particularly for those looking for quieter natural attractions away from the best-known destinations.
