Nearby protected areas include Vatnsfjörður and Látrabjarg.
Access is restricted and fossils must not be removed.
The fossil plant material preserved in the gorge gives scientists valuable evidence of vegetation and climate in Iceland millions of years ago. Because the geological record is irreplaceable, access and collection are carefully controlled.
The purpose of protecting Surtarbrandsgil is to conserve unique geological strata and fossil plant remains that provide important evidence of Iceland's ancient climate and vegetation.
Surtarbrandsgil contains sedimentary layers around 12 million years old with exceptionally diverse fossil plant remains.
Access to the gorge is only permitted with a ranger and removing fossils or lignite is prohibited.
