Sultartangi Reservoir lies within the Thjorsa and Tungnaa hydropower system. Water from the two river systems meets in the reservoir before being used at Sultartangi Power Station.
The reservoir is retained by Sultartangi Dam, approximately 6.1 kilometres long and the longest dam in Iceland. Long headrace tunnels carry water from the reservoir through Sandafell towards the power station.
