Sólbrekkuskógur Forest on Reykjanes
Sólbrekkuskógur is a sheltered woodland west of Grindavíkurvegur, just south of its junction with Reykjanesbraut. The forest provides a pleasant recreational stop on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
Forestry history
Planting began in 1965 with approximately 1,500 Sitka spruce seedlings on largely treeless land. Birch, willow, blue spruce and several pine species were introduced during subsequent years. Forestry activity increased again with the national afforestation programme in 1990.
Nature and landscape
The woodland occupies gentle slopes surrounded in places by low rocky outcrops that provide natural shelter. Seltjörn lake lies a short distance to the south.
Walking and facilities
Well-maintained paths pass through the woodland. Visitors can enjoy clearings with benches, picnic tables and barbecue facilities. The forest is particularly suitable for short walks and family outings.
