Iceland’s independence movement was a long political process in which demands for greater rights, home rule and eventually sovereignty reshaped Iceland’s relationship with Denmark. During the 19th and 20th centuries, nationalism, constitutional reform and political debate became central to the movement.

Important people and milestones are explored further through Jón Sigurðsson and Republic of Iceland. The independence movement ultimately led to Icelandic sovereignty in 1918 and the establishment of the republic in 1944.
