Discover Iceland
Raufarhólshellir is a large lava tube in Leitahraun in Southwest Iceland, close to Þrengslavegur. The cave is about 1.36 kilometres long and contains broad chambers, several openings and volcanic formations created as lava drained beneath a cooling surface.
The cave lies in a lava field formed thousands of years ago and is one of the best-known lava caves in this part of Iceland. Access inside a lava cave can involve uneven ground, darkness, ice and falling-rock hazards, so visitors should follow current access rules and appropriate safety guidance.
One of Iceland's longest and best-known lava tubes, formed in the Leitahraun eruption about 5,200 years ago.
Walkways and lighting are installed in part of the cave. Longer adventure tours continue deeper into the natural tunnel.
