Múlakot Forest in Fljótshlíð
Múlakot is home to one of the oldest and most diverse arboretums in South Iceland. Sheltered beneath a cliff in Fljótshlíð, near Hvolsvöllur, the woodland contains impressive mature trees and several species rarely encountered elsewhere in Iceland.
Forestry history
Múlakot was the site of the first State Forestry Service nursery in South Iceland. During the 1930s, numerous tree species were introduced from Norway, followed by plants and cuttings from North America. The forestry authorities acquired approximately 13 hectares of land here in 1990.
Trees and vegetation
Visitors can discover ash, elm, maple, fir, aspen, weeping birch and golden chain trees. Some poplars have reached heights of approximately 25 metres.
Walking
The older woodland beneath the cliff is easy to explore on foot. Steps lead to an upper forest area with a walking trail. Múlakot is particularly interesting for visitors who enjoy trees, botany and Icelandic forestry history.
