Lofthellir Ice Cave
Lofthellir is a lava cave in the Lake Mývatn region famous for its extensive and long-lasting natural ice formations. Cold conditions within the lava tube preserve the ice throughout the year.
Reaching the cave involves travelling along rough tracks followed by a walk across a lava field. The entrance is narrow and visitors must crawl briefly before reaching the larger chambers.
Visits are made with a guide and typically include helmets, headlamps and equipment suitable for icy conditions.
